Annie.R – Megalo

22 06 2009

Annie.R – Megalo (Jamendo)

A dose of blunt Pop today, the likes of which I habitually avoid for reasons unknown to even me given that, all things considered, I’ve nothing in particular against the music itself. Annie.R, who loses points by default for having the full stop there, is a songstress working on the borders of that heartland of female singer song writers who seem to be an eternal presense in the world of mainstream music. The Wind Whistles – Animals Are People Too

10 06 2009

The Wind Whistles – Animals Are People Too (Aaahh Records)

Another release here from those prolific purveyors of Indie Folk, Aaahh Records who, as well as being home to the habitually excellent Julia Kotowski (also known as Entertainment for the Braindead) play host to Canadian strummers ‘The Wind Whistles’. Who, for those not in the know, have been reviewed on this here blog once before in a relatively polite and likeable way. Read the rest of this entry »

Singles Night

nobonus NoBonus – No Code

A thoroughly Doors-esque single here from the Psychedelic, whirling wastelands of  France. Surprisingly good quality for a live recording but not exactly the most  original effort, still, it’s an entertaining enough listen and at 15 minutes it’s well worth  the money you’re not paying for this nicely crafted effort.  Click on the picture to head  over and download.

Antropy – Dirty Little Mind

A fairly polished little dose of Indie Pop, not particularly inspired and a bit of an audio mash up of a fairly predictable list of influences but it does what it does better than most and is more than listenable enough to have somewhere on a Summer play list.

Electric Sheep Blowjob – One Beat Sessions

If you’re going to choose a name like that you really should produce music to match it rather than fairly generic Electronica, but that aside… A dose of small and well crafted Electronica from Finland (Electric Sheep Blowjob – would have worked far better on a Death Metal band but ho hum), not all that exciting but in the vast ocean of online bedroom DJ releases this holds its own somewhere just above the middle.

Christophe Marc – The Funny Fall

2 05 2009

Christophe Marc – The Funny Fall (Jamendo)

After listing Christophe’s single a few days back in my revelatory, consciousness expanding, superlative singles round up I found word reaching me of a fully fledged solo album from the same, my extensive and exhaustive spy network reporting back to me every detail of note from the world of Creative Commons as they do (well, he actually told me about it himself but let’s not split hairs). My curiosity piqued and my appetite for experimental Hip Hop, my latest obsession, finally satiated I meandered over to Jamendo and hit the download button with hope in my heart and a glint in my eye. Or at least a cup of tea in my hand and a few hours to kill. Read the rest of this entry »

christophe-mercminiChristophe Marc – Next To The Sea

A fairly straight forward Indie single here with a dash of the Morrissey’s about it which makes for a rather nice, thoughtful listen. Listed as an E.P. for some reason there’s still only two songs so double A-Side it is then. Well worth a download. A download which you can download by clicking this download link.

pih-pohPih Poh & The MTPockets – 1ère

Upbeat and Poppy French Hip-Hop which has a vaguely Latin beat to it, fairly throw away in my opinion but fun for a while and available HERE. Plus it’s another two-for-one deal with the B-Side being more of the same.

anakondaminiAnakonda – Les Affamés du Pouvoir

And to round off this little singles mixer more of that good aul time Hip Hop, this time in a slightly dodgily produced package but with enough traces of interestingness to be worth a listen. Helped a fair bit by the vocals, which have a nicely driving quality to them. Clicky here, ce-vooo-play.

Tab – Poet in the Darkness

Tab – Poet in the Dark (Jamendo)

Good production, good vocals, good lyrics, on a CC Hip-Hop album? Why yes, yes indeed and I was surprised too. For some reason the Creative Commons scene always seem to have trouble getting Hip-Hop right, generally there’s an abundance of good producers plying their trade but never having anything to do with Rappers, in fact they have trouble collaborating with anyone which is probably because they’re too busy being locked away with a computer and fantasies about their own little niche. Tab however is a pleasant exception to the usual way of things in that he invests equal amounts in both sides of Hip-Hop. Although his method may be a little demanding for most given that he both produces the majority of this album and raps on it too, as well as playing the guitar, which would stretch the talent and patience of most and leaves me wondering exactly what’s left for his usual group, The Dead Poets, to do when he’s not busy being a solo artist. The Wagner Logic – Easiest to Grab

The Wagner Logic – Easiest to Grab (Jamendo)

The normal habit for people posting their work on Jamendo is to say ‘we can’t define ourselves by a genre’, which is annoying and usually completely untrue but such is life I suppose. A rather more bizarre habit though is to list genres which you clearly have nothing to do with, which I can only assume The Wagner Logic did by accident when they typed ‘Punk’ in the little box given that, in the words of Bill Bailey, they’re about ‘as Punk as Enya’. Now I hope it was a typo on their behalf but it could just be that in the wilds of Alaska anyone who manages to stir themselves from their hibernation long enough to cobble together an album of rather dull Indie is rated as a radical free spirit, raging against the system and fighting the machine, or polar bears, or whatever it is Alaskans do.
